[Show full abstract] Due to their high specific volumetric capacitance, electrolytic capacitors are used in many fields of power electronics, mainly for filtering and energy storage functions. Their characteristics change strongly with frequency, temperature and aging time.
Aging is distinguished between the following changes in the capacitor performance: Change in capacitance, ESR and leakage current during operation (with voltage applied) and reduction of dielectric strength due to degradation of the dielectric (no voltage applied).
Stacked foil type of large-sized aluminum electrolytic capacitor has developed with new capacitor element construction by Nippon Chemi-Con's. Compared to the cylinder-shaped conventional aluminum electrolytic capacitors with the same capacitance value, the stacked foil type has remarkably low ESR characteristics and high ripple current capability.
