Spar Women’s Challenge Jozi 2023 celebrates strength and resilience

​​​In a Challenge Jozi 2023 took place on Sunday, 1 October, marking a powerful return to community spirit and active living after a period of separation.

The venue for this spirited gathering was Marks Park Sports Club, with proceedings commencing at 8am. The sprawling expanse of the sports club promised an ideal setting for a day filled with camaraderie, competition, and the collective pursuit of fitness and well-being.

Kicking off the race, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu, delivered an inspiring address, emphasizing the remarkable resilience and strength exhibited by the women who have chosen to be part of this empowering event.

He praised their commitment to fostering functional and healthy communities, underlining the vital role they play in shaping the city of Johannesburg.

“Today, we gather to celebrate the power of mass participation in sports, particularly highlighting the invaluable contribution of women in the vibrant city of Johannesburg. In the heart of this dynamic city, women have risen as beacons of strength and skill, showcasing their prowess across various sporting disciplines. Their dedication, resilience, and unwavering spirit have not only enriched the sports landscape but also inspired countless others,” said Cllr Magwentshu.

The event not only was a display of physical prowess but also a testament to the unbreakable spirit of unity within the community. Participants geared up to embrace the challenge, eager to demonstrate their determination and commitment to a healthier, stronger Johannesburg.

Ethiopian runner Selam Gebre (Nedbank won the Jozi leg of the SparWomen’s 10 km Challenge in 33:41 minutes on Sunday. Another Ethiopian, Debash Kelati Desta, was second in 33:55. Three-times Spar Grand Prix winner, Irvette van Zyl (Hollywood RC) was third in 35:08.  

The Spar Women’s Challenge Jozi 2023 stands as a beacon of hope, unity, and the enduring power of community. Together, we stride towards a future of well-being, camaraderie, and the continued celebration of women’s strength in the heart of Johannesburg.
