Illegal firearms seized during Operaton Shanela in Gauteng

Efforts to curb the presence of various crimes in our communities continue to yield successful outcomes following joint operations executed by SAPS members, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic, CPF, Home Affairs and other law enforcement agencies.  A total of 357 suspects were arrested and 8 illegal liquor outlets shut down.

In Katlehong area, On Saturday, 28 October, during an Integrated Operation Shanela, law enforcement agencies managed to arrest two suspects for possession of three unlicensed firearms and ammunition while executing their duties at Moleleki Extension 2.

Two suspects were arrested after law enforcers went to a car wash and noticed a man hiding something in one of the cars. The police immediately approached the car and searched it. They discovered two AK47 rifles, a pistol and ammunition.

Among the suspects arrested this weekend, 277 suspects were nabbed by the Detectives who were tracing suspects in the District Policing precincts during their Shanela operations conducted on Saturday, whereby 129 were arrested for Contact crime, 21 for contact related crime, 5 for property crime. Two for tempering with essential infrastructure, 5 for crimes depending on Police action and 34 for Gender Based-Violence issues.

Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended the efforts by the teams in order to reduce crime as well as addressing proliferation of unlicensed firearms in the District.
