Joburg Zoo Owloween transports young and old to ghastly ghost land
For one night only, the Johannesburg Zoo was transformed into a ghastly ghost land and superheroes and characters were gathered together under the stars. The Owloween event hosted by Joburg City Parks and Zoo on Saturday, 28 October, was an immense success.
The spooky spectacular attracted both young and old. Visitors came dressed in superheroes, supervillains, anime characters and celebrities. It was the one evening where you could spot the Joker and his archnemesis Batman under one roof and even Harley Quin was spotted among the crowd with her red and blue locks and her famous baseball bat on her shoulders.

Maleficent, Little Red Riding Hood, fairytale princesses, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, Deadpool, the Queen of Hearts, and the Mad Hatter all made an appearance, and many more fantastical characters graced the occasion. The team went all out with the decor to give visitors the chills and accentuate the experience.
Nothing got spookier than the haunted house. Outside waited trick-or-treat and those who dared to enter were transported to a scary setting. To set the vibe and keep everyone warm there was a bonfire. Children were entertained with rides and the swings in the entertainment zone. Food was served from a variety of vendors as well as the restaurant on site.
Since the day coincided with the Rugby World Cup final, the match was livestreamed on the green lawns on a big open screen. In true South African spirit everyone’s eyes were focused on the nail-biting match and jumped up and screamed with excited when the Springboks reign supreme.
Owloween 2023 was the perfect mixture of fantasy and reality. It was a night to remember where even superheroes set their differences aside, proving that when imagination takes flight even the spookiest of nights can be extraordinary.
