The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit received a complaint and a call for backup from Tracker SA regarding a Suzuki Swift hijacked in Vosloorus and the vehicle was heading towards Johannesburg.
Additional information hinted that a passenger in the hijacked vehicle was shot. Whilst on surveillance information was conveyed indicating that the suspects were travelling along 19th Avenue in Alexandra with further information indicating that the vehicle was entering the N3 travelling towards Vosloorus.
The officers swiftly responded and caught up to the chase at Grey Avenue in Germiston. They attempted to pull over the sought vehicle with two occupants using blue lights and a siren, the suspects started firing at the officers and a shootout ensued.
The suspects’ vehicle swerved off to the far left of the roadway and landed in a ditch 500m before the Barry Marais offramp. The duo attempted to flee the scene on foot. The officers and Tracker SA members managed to apprehend both males.
Whilst the scene was being processed an unlicensed firearm was found under the seat of the vehicle. The officers further discovered that the deceased body of the male passenger (victim) from the hijacked vehicle was found on the side of the road, not too far from the scene where the vehicle was hijacked. It was also revealed that a case of rape was opened against the males.
Both suspects aged 31 were detained at Vosloorus SAPS and charged with armed robbery with aggregating circumstances, possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and murder.
