Ademola Lookman puts emphasis on unity as Nigeria book AFCON last eight

After scoring twice to help Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 on Saturday night to seal a place in the quarterfinals of the AFCON, attacker Ademola Lookman put a strong emphasis on team unity.

The Super Eagles produced a strong performance against The Indomitable Lions in Abidjan and are well on course to try add another continental title to the three they already have. But Lookman was reserved when asked about their chances, saying he’d leave it to pundits and the media to predict.

“Well, I think it’s for you guys to write the stories and to be the judge, as a team we believe in each other like I said and we are all behind each other. So, that’s all we care about, having each other’s backs on the pitch, in training, off the field, we keep on encouraging each other,” Lookman said.

Nigeria now have a date with Angola at the same venue where they dismantled rivals Cameroon, and it is another tough encounter. Lookman is counting on the solid performance from Saturday night as many will start talking about The Super Eagles as potential title contenders.

“We’re into the quarterfinals and we’ve worked so hard to be here and like I said before, we are behind each other and we don’t take anything for granted and I think that shows in our work ethic, how we fight for each other, how we defend, how we attack. So, that’s the way we celebrate,” Lookman said.

Voted Man of the Match in Abidjan, the Serie A player did not want to take any credit despite being the two-goal hero. “I think as a team from the start in terms of training, in terms of the mindset, I think we’ve all been together, we’ve been behind each other as individuals and as a team and I think everyone can see that. So, we continue in this way and we continue to do what we’ve been doing,” Lookman added.
